How We Work

With experience, comes knowledge. Our design team understands that every client’s project is unique. To provide an exceptional experience, we’ve created a comprehensive outline of how we work to achieve an interior design plan that’s right for you.

Our First Appointment

The first meeting with a new client is really about initiating a relationship, as we are about to embark on a creative and collaborative journey together. We want to learn about each client’s personality and preferences to determine their personal needs and style. This starts by listening to what they are trying to achieve, the scope of the job, and then setting a design direction. We pride ourselves on good communication. To create a successful interior, the process must be well managed, the client’s needs and dreams carefully considered, and the budget respected. Our role is to bring your dream to life. In order to achieve this vision, our initial meeting will usually include the following topics:

  • Desired style or aesthetic
  • Preferred and disliked colors
  • Preferred wood tones and finishes
  • Time frame and deadlines
  • Budget
    • Is this an immediate or future project?
    • Do you wish to work in stages?
  • Review our website portfolio for style preferences
  • Review client’s magazine clippings or Houzz idea book
  • Review client’s existing plans and the function of each room
  • Discuss any previous experience with an interior designer, builder, or architect

If your project includes construction, we may discuss:

  • Our recommendations of other professionals
  • New construction or areas to be renovated
  • Scope of the project
  • Existing plans, drawings, or conceptuals
  • Materials to be specified
  • Budget and time frame
  • Residential and commercial interior design
  • Custom furniture and cabinetry design
  • Kitchen and bath design
  • Space planning
  • Consultation
  • Product specification
  • Project management
  • Purchasing
  • Installation

Services include the review of architectural drawings submitted by others, and if applicable; the preparation of furniture, lighting and finish plans; the design of custom built-ins or cabinetry; selections of new furniture (along with using any meaningful existing furniture) colors, fabrics, treatment of floors (tile, wood, carpet, and rugs etc.), walls and ceilings (paints, textures, and wall coverings, etc.), lighting, window treatments, artwork, and accessories.

How We Charge

New construction: Understanding that the building industry usually charges in terms of percentages, we would estimate on a higher end home that our fees would be in the 2% range of the total build. This is hard to estimate without seeing the client’s project, understanding what needs to be determined and most importantly understanding their desires for the finished product. Variables might include a client that already has made many finish decisions, less square footage, a more straightforward design, or a more custom home. The higher end range may be in circumstances when we are helping with interior and exterior finishes, all the fine details in the construction process, custom cabinetry designs, and a detailed construction reference book. As one client recently put it, “You were a small portion of the total price of building my home, but you made all the difference in the finished outcome.”

Hourly rates: They can seem daunting when a client doesn’t have a concept of how much time will be involved for their particular project. We understand that. After our initial consultation to discuss the client’s wishes and scope, we usually are able to offer an estimate of billable time it will take to complete their project. We have found we are fairly accurate with our hourly projections because of our years of design experience with so many types of clients and projects. Our hourly estimated range accounts for not only the design work, but client appointments, re-selections, detailed drawings (if the project calls for it), and site visits. We charge a lesser hourly rate for our associate designer’s CAD or 3-dimensional drawings if needed. Our projects start with a deposit on file that is later applied to the final invoices. Deposits are determined by each project, based on the total estimated scope.

One time consultations: We know not all projects need our full-service interior design expertise, and we are happy to provide a consultation at your home or business. You can schedule a visit up to two hours, for a specified fee that depends on which of our most appropriate designers are available. The fee is due at the visit.

Purchasing

Construction materials: Part of our job is to specify construction materials. Depending on the project, and if there is a builder involved, we might purchase some specialty items e.g. plumbing and lighting fixtures, tile, flooring, and wall coverings, etc.

Furnishings: We provide pricing quotations for products specified through our studio. Due to our large purchasing volumes with our vendors, we have the ability to buy many products at full wholesale cost. This enables us to sell to our clients at a percentage off of retail pricing. We almost always wait to price materials until final selections are made by our clients. This isn’t to say we aren’t thinking about your budget as we select materials. We will be sourcing products that match your investment guidelines, but since our selections are mostly custom to each client, we don’t have a master list for goods we specify on hand. We do charge for this time until you meet a minimum purchase requirement. At that point after you place your order, there are no further hourly design fees.

Time spent placing and tracking orders, coordinating receiving and deliveries, and handling freight (or the occasional issue with quality or damaged goods), will be our responsibility. We are sticklers for details and expect excellence in the pieces you order from us.
